Xiao Qing Long Tang Minor Bluegreen Dragon Decoction
Sign/symptoms fever and chills, no sweating, cough and wheezing, weak lungs, stuffy chest, copious mucous, difficult to exectorate
Pathogenesis: weak lungs, prones to EPF, pathogenic yin accumulation due to weak LU, KD, SP
Treatment principle: release exterior, transform congested pathogenic yin, warm the Lungs, redirect rebellious qi
Chief herb: Ma huang: warm , acrid, promote sweating to release exterior 10g
Gu Zhi: warm, sweet, acrid, warm KD yang to transform pathogenic water, warm and unblock channels, relax muscles. 10g
Deputy herb: Gan jiang: warm spleen 10g
Xi xin: descend qi 10g
Ban xia: dry damp 15g
wu wei zhi: prevent abnormal leakage of sweat 6g

Jiu Wei Qiang Hou Tang 9 herb decotion with Notopterygium
Signs/symptoms: aversion to cold, fever, no sweating, headache, stiff neck, body ache
Pathogenesis: Exterior wind-cold damp w/accumulated internal heat

Huang qin: cold and bitter, clear internal heat from upper jiao 3g
Sheng Di huang: cold and bitter, nourish blood and yin due to lossof body fluids from excess sweating 3g

Bio medical disorders: Upper Respiratory tract infection URTI, Influenza, sinusitis, acute lower back pain, rheumatic fever
Modifications: Add Qin Jiao: upper jiao and shoulder
Remove shen di huang and jiang win: absent of thirst or bitter taste
Add shi gao and zhi mu: pronounced thirst and irritability
Add Jie jing, Niu bang Zi, and Bo he: dry and sore throat
add Xing Ren and Qian Hu- coughing up thick sputum
Remove Sheng di huang, add Hou xiang, and Zhi ban Xia: epigastric discomfort and distention.

Xiang Su San Cyperus and Perilla leaf powder
Signs: aversion to cold, fever, bodyaches, no sweating, loss appetite, thin white coating, wiry pulse
Pathogenesis: Exterior wind-cold w/pre-existing qi stagnation
Treatment principle: Release wind-cold, regulate and move Qi.
Chief: Zi Su Ye: warm, acrid, stimulates Lung D/D, expel wind-cold, stimulate SP T/T move qi, transform damp 12g
Deputy: Chen Pi: warm, acrid, aromatic, transform damp, regulate and move Qi. 12g

Jia Wei xiang Su San Augmented Cyperus and Perilla Leaf powder

Shi shen tong 10 Miracle Decoction
Signs: Epidemic disorders, wind-cold symptoms, headache, no sweat, fever, cough, nasal congestion, low voice, Qi stagnation: chest
Pathogenesis: Wind cold exterior affecting the LU D/D functions, wead D/D function leading to qi stagnation and water accumulation in chest
Treatment principle: Release exterior, regulate qi, descend LU rebellious Qi, alleviate cough
Chief: Zi Su Ye: warm, acrid, stimulates Lung D/D, expel wind-cold, stimulate SP T/T move qi, transform damp 6-9g
Deputy: Xiang fu: neutral, acrid, bitter, soothes Liver, moves qi in 3 burners. 6-9g
Chen Pi: warm, acrid, aromatic, transform damp, regulate and move Qi. 6-9g
*Three of them promote free flow of qi in san jiao.
Deputy: Ma Huang: acrid, warm 6g
Ge Gen: sweet, acrid, cool, aids the chief herb in release exterior, strong ascending 12-18g
Chuan Xiong: acrid, warm, invigorate blood to remove pain, soothes liver. 6g
Chi Shao: bitter, sour, cold, action of venting heat from interior to surface to be released. 6-9g
*Combo of chuan xiong and Chi shao: invigorate blood to remove painful stagnation 6g
Assistant: Sheng Ma: acrid, sweet, cool, works with Ge Gen to sooth muscles from stagnation. 6-9g
Bai Zhi: Acrid, warm, release constraints in Yang Ming channels 6g
*Combo of gen gen, chuan xiong, and Bai zhi treat wind cold headache and nasal congestion.
Envoy: Sheng jiang: acrid warm, release exterior, aids in main action of formula. 3g

Deputy: Bai Bian Dou: neutral, sweet, enters middle jiao to strengthen SP T/T, transform turbit, raise clear yang qi. Assist chief damp transform 6-9g
Assistant: Hou Po: warm, bitter, aromatic, spicy, stimulates downward Qi movement, transform damp, removes fullness in ST. 6-9g
Cautions and contraindications: take cold, warm can cause vomiting.

Sang Ju Yin Mulberry Leaf and Chrysanthemum Decoction
Signs/symptoms: Exterior wind-heat signs, coughing, mild fever, slight thirst, thin white coating, floating rapid pulse
Pathogenesis: Exterior wind-heat invading LU, disfunction of Lung D/d
Treatment principle: Release exterior heat, activate Lung D/D to stop cough
Chief: Sang ye: bitter sweet cold, release wind heat, clear heat from lung to stop cough 10g
Ju hua: bitter, cold, release wind heat exterior, clear heat from eyes 12g
Deputy: Lian Qiao: acrid and cool 10g
Bo he: acrid aromatic, cool 10g
*both herbs release wind heat exterior.
Xing Ren: bitter and warm 15g
Jie Geng: neutral bitter, acrid 10g
*combination of Xing Ren Lung qi descending and jie gang ascending yin to throat to help stop cough
Assistant herbs: Lu Gen: cold , sweet, generate fluids, clear heat to reduce thirst 10g
Envoy: Gan Cao: clear heat, harmonize other herbs. 3g
Commentery: formula is to stop cough due to wind-heat, can be used to moisten and treat eye disorders.
Biomedically: URTI,influenza, early stage bronchitis, tonsilitis, conjunctivitis.
Modifications: add shi gao and zhi mu: moisten qi level dryness, also for labored breathing and wheezing
add xuan shen and Xi jiao: clears ying level heat
Remove lu gen and bo he and Add main men dong, Yu Zhu , Sheng di huang and Mu dan Pi: clear heat from blood
add huang qin: clear lung heat
add tian hua fen: moisten thirst
add gua lou pi and Zhe bei mu: treats viscous mucus
add ma bo and niu bang zhi: sore throat
add Ci Ji Li, Jue Ming Zi and Xiao Ku Cao: wind heat affecting eyes.

Yin Qiao San Honeysuckle and Forsythia Powder
Signs/symptoms: Sore thorat, slight chills, fever, headache, thirst, cough, red tip w/thin yellow dry coating, floating rapid pulse
Pathogenesis: Wind-heat exterior invasion of upper jiao, early stage warm febrile disease
Treatment principle: release wind heat, clear heat, relieve toxicity
Chief: Jin Yin Hua: cold, sweet 10-15g
Lian qiao: acrid, cool 10-15g
* both these release wind-exterior and clear heat to relieve toxicity
Deputy: Jie Gang: neutral, bitter, acrid 3-6g
Niu Bang zi: cold, acrid, bitter 10-12g
* both these help lungs D/D and benefit throat.
Bo he: acrid aromatic, cool 3-6g
Dan dou Chi: sweet, bitter, cold 3-6g
*both these herbs clear internal heat.
Assistant: Jing Jie: warm , acrid, accentuates exterior releaseing w/o drying fluids 6-9g
Dan zhu ye: sweet cold 3-6g
Xian Lu gen: sweet, cold 15-30g
Gan Cao: sweet neutral 3g
* these 3 herbs generate fluids and alleviate thirst.
Commentery: This formula is for febrile disease where wind-heat is at the Wei level
Bio-Medicaly defined: URTI, Influenza, Early stage bronchitis, measles, epidemic parotis, acute endometritis, encephalisits, meningitis.
Modifications: add hou xiang: stifling sensation in chest
add xuan shen: severe sore throat
add Xing Ren: pronounced cough
add Pu gong Ying and Da Qing Ye: early stage carbuncle
add hou xiang and Yu jin: stiffling sensation in chest and epigastrium
add Chan tui and Fu Ping: early stage measles with incomplete eruption of rash.

Chai ge Jie Ji Tang Bupleurum and Kudzu Decoction to Release the Muscle Layer
Signs/symptoms: increase fever/decrease chills, headache, stiff extremeties, eye pain/pressure, irritability, insomnia, thin yellow coat, flooding pulse
Pathogenesis: wind cold and wind heat not properly treated leading to internal heat, EPF settles into muscle layer
Treatment principle: release the pathogen from muscles, clear internal heat.
Chief: Chai Hu: cold, bitter, acrid, harmonizes shao yang, soothes liver, raise clear yang 3-10g
Ge Gen: cool, sweet, acrid, release exterior, relax muscles, clear heat 6-12g
*these two release pathogens from muscle layer while clearing heat.
Deputy: Qiang Hou: warm, acrid 3-6g
Bai Zhi: Acrid, warm, release constraints in Yang Ming channels 3-6g
*these two will accenturate the chief herbs action of release exterior and alleviate pain.
Huang Qin: cold, bitter, drain internal heat from upper jiao. 6-9g
shi gao: cold, sweet, acrid 4.5-15g
*these two combined clear heat from yang ming channels.
Assistant herbs: Jie Gang: warm, acrid, dispel external pathogens by invigorating the Lungs D/D function 3-6g
Bai shao: cool, bitter, sour, nourish yin that may be lost due to sweating 6-9g
Envoy: Gan Cao: clear heat, harmonize other herbs. 3-6g
Sheng jiang: acrid warm, release exterior, aids in main action of formula. 3-6g
Da Zao: neutral sweet 2-3 pieces
*these 3 will regulate Wei and ying qi to release external pathogens.
Cautions and contraindications: if EPF has not entered interior or for Yang ming Fu stage syndrome.
Bio medical: Influenza, toothache
Modifications: add tian hua fen and Zhi mu: moisten dryness of mouth and tongue
remove qiang huo and Bai zhi: patient is w/o chills, headache and pain
add guo Lou pi and zhu Bei mu: coughing and viscous mucus.

Sheng MA Ge Gen Tang Cimicifuga and Kudzu Decoction
Signs/symptoms: Skin rashes, fever, headache, cough, red eyes, thirst, red tongue, rapid pulse
Pathogenesis: Early stage measles or rashes due to externally contracted heat trapped in LU and ST
Treatment principle: Release the pathogens from the muscle layer, vent rashes
Chief herbs: Sheng Ma: acrid, sweet, cool, disperse Yang pathogens from yang ming channels, raise yang qi, vent heat to surface. 3-6g
Ge Gen: cool, sweet, acrid, release exterior, relax muscles, clear heat 6-12g
Deputy: Chi shao: bitter, sour, cold, action of venting heat from interior to surface to be released. Goes to blood level to clear heat, skin rashes. 6-9g
Envoy: Zhi Gan Cao: Neutral , Sweet, harmonizes the action of other herbs. 3g

Ban lan Gen: bitter, cold, clear heat, releive toxicitiy. 15-30g
Biomedically: URTI, influenza, acute tonsillitis, pharyngitis, epidemic parotitis.

Ren Shen Bai Du San Ginseng Powder to Overcome Pathogenic Influences
Signs/symptoms: high fever, chills w/shivering, no sweating, stiff neck, sore extremities, chest full, nasal congestion, wet cough, greasy white coating, soggy pulse
Pathogenesis: Exterior wind-cold dampness invasion, underlying true qi def.
Treatment principle: release exterior, dispel wind damp, tonify true qi
Chief: Qiang hou: warm, acrid, entes upper UB channel, release exterior wind cold, expels damp in upper body. 30g
Du Huo: warm, acrid, enters lower UB channel, release exterior wind cold damp to alleviate pain in lower part. 30g
Deputy: Chuan xiong: warm, spicy, opens the meridian, invigorates blood to alleviate pain 30g
Chai Hu: cold, bitter, acrid, harmonizes shao yang, soothes liver, raise clear yang 30g
Bo he: acrid aromatic, cool
*Chai Hu and Bo he: disperse external pathogens and clear heat

Ma huang Fu Zi Xi Xin tang Ephedra, Prepared Aconite and Asarum Decoction
Signs/symptoms: Extreme aversion to cold, fever, dull spirit, sleepiness, deep, slow, weak pulse
Pathogenesis: Exterior wind cold invasion, underlying Yang Def.
Treatment principle: release exterior wind-cold , warm yang
Commentery: formula addresses root cause KD yang Def., and symptoms of Exterior syndrome
additional uses: chronic cough and wheezing, laryngitis, raspy voice and sore throat

Fu zi: hot, toxic, acrid, strong warming, warms KD Yang, and meridian to expel out external pathogens 10g

Zai Zao San Renewal Powder
Signs/symptoms: slight fever w/chills, no sweat, cold extremeties, chronic fatigue, pale complexion, weak voice, pale white coat, deep weak pulse
Pathogenesis: exterior wind-cold invasion with Yang and qi def.
Treatment principle: Tonify yang and Qi, induce sweating, release exterior
Chief: Huang Qi: sweet, warm, tonifies qi, blood, and middle jiao, tonifies wei qi to stabalize exterior. 6g
Ren shen: warm, sweet, tonify primary and True qi to prevent further invasion and expel external pathogen, nourish fluids. 3g
*these two are primary for tonify primary and True qi.
Deputy: Fu zi: hot, toxic, acrid, strong warming, warms KD Yang, and meridian to expel out external pathogens 3g
Gui Zhi: warm, sweet, spicy 3g
Xi xin: warm, acrid, enters LU and KD, assist ma huang actions, treats coughing. 3g
*these 3 combined aid to expel out the EPF by warming channels

Da Jian Zhong Tang Major Construct the Middle Decoction
Signs/symptoms: Excruciating epigastric pain, strong cold area in epigastric region, severe vomiting, unable to eat, tongue: white, slippery coating, Pulse: tight, wiry.
Pathogenesis: Accumulation of cold, def. cold, Yang def.,
Treatment principle: warm and tonify middle jiao, redirect rebellious ST qi, alleviates pain.
Contraindications: Internal clumping, damp-heat accumulation, Yin and Bood Def.
Chief: Hua Jiao: acrid, very hot, warms ming-men fire, Yang Qi of Middle Jiao, Dispels cold thus alleviating cold. 3-9g
Deputy: Gan jiang: acrid, hot, warms middle jiao, redirects rebellious qi due to cold. 12g
Assistant: Ren shen: sweet, bitter, warm 6g
Yi tang: sweet, warm, warms middle jiao, generates fluid, alleviates thirst, alleviates abdominal spasm and pain. Prevents drying action of chief herb. 18-30g
Commentery: the formula is used to treat severe abdominal pain and cold.
Modifications: Reduce dosage of yi tang, and add Wu Mei, Bing Lang, and Shi Ji Zi: round worm.
Add Zhi Ban Xia and Sheng Jiang: Nausea.
Add Gui Zhi: numbness of extremities.
Add Dan shen and Yan Hou Sou and Mi Xiang: sever pain.

Gan Cao Gan Jiang Tang Licorice and Ginger Decoction
Signs/symptoms: Cold extremeties, absence of thirst, dryness in throat, Excessive alivation, spitting clear fluids, irritability, dizziness, frequent urination.
Tongue: Pale, wet w/o coating. Pulse: Weak, slow.
Pathogenesis: Lung qi def., cold accumulation of Lung, Lung atrophy
Treatment: Warm the Lungs, strengthen the stomach

Si Ni Tang Frigid Extremities Decoction
Signs/symptoms: Extremely cold extremeties, intolerance to cold, sleeping curled up, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea with undigested food, abdominal pain, lack of thirst.
tongue: pale, white slippery coat. Pulse: deep, weak, thready.
pathogenesis: shao Yin cold pattern, accumulation of internal cold.
Treatment: Rescue collapsed yang, warm the middle jiao, stop diarrhea.

Pathogenesis: Pathogenic cold injuring yang qi, collapse of Yang qi and qi, weak qi circulation.
treatment: Restore and revive collapsed yang, tonify qi, restore the pulse.

Shen Fu Tang Ginseng and Prepared Aconite Decoction
Signs/symptoms: Cold extremeties, cold sweat, shallow breathing, dizziness, pulse: feeble
pathogenesis: Severe def. yuan source Qi. Collapse of Yang Qi.
Treatment principles: Restore Yang Qi, Tonifies yuan source qi, rescues Qi from collapse.
Chief: Ren shen: bitter, sweet, warm, tonifies Qi (middle jiao) in order to warm yang, nourish yin, calm shen due to loss of fluid from vomiting. 6g
strongly tonifes post and preheaven qi, tonifies heart and lung qi, nourish yin and fluids.
Deputy: Zhi fu Zi: acrid, hot, toxic: Strongly warms yang Qi of ming men, ming men fire reaches exterior and interior (middle jiao and intestines). 15g
commentery: strongly revives middle jiao, center of transformation. Tonifying middle jiao also controls and nourishes the grandson: kidney.
Modifications: Add Long Gu, Mu Li, Bai shao, Zhi Gan Cao: shock or heart failure.
